Free Wi-Fi, but Not for All
The battle between free and paid wireless Internet access is starting to look like a draw. Or more accurately, a third variation is winning - a combination of the two.
Travelers want to log on everywhere at no charge, while hotels, airports and coffee shops are looking for a way to pay for their Wi-Fi networks as visitors increasingly use greater amounts of bandwidth.
The compromise that is emerging is to offer both free and paid options, with the free services increasingly requiring something in return, like viewing an advertisement or signing up for a loyalty program.
'Our position is, give the user a choice,' said David Blumenfeld, a senior vice president with JiWire, which publishes an online directory of free hotspots but also sells ads displayed on public Wi-Fi networks. 'It's not an argument about free versus paid,' he said. 'It's free and paid.'

Flagstaff hotel plan may be refiled
Plans for a six-story resort on Flagstaff Mountain in Jim Thorpe, rejected in March after a deadline passed without the developer submitting parking details, could be resubmitted as early as today, the developer said.
Tim Markley of Surreal Properties, who owns Flagstaff Ballroom and Gallo's Pub & Grill, said he probably will appear before the borough Planning Commission to discuss the plans May 20.
Markley said alterations to his original plans are minor and include a new access easement agreement with developer Jacob Arner of Awesome View Estates, who owns the neighboring 86-lot Canyon Rim Estates development. Read More.

Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in the U.S. state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park — one of the first national parks in the United States. It is more than a great chasm carved over millennia through the rocks of the Colorado Plateau. It is more than an awe-inspiring view. It is more than a pleasuring ground for those that explore the roads, hike the trails, or float the currents of the turbulent Colorado River.
It has been said that the canyon was created by the Colorado River over a period of six million years, but research released in 2008 shows it as much as longer 17 million year time span. The canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, and 4 to 18 miles wide (6.4 to 29 km) and attains a depth of more than a mile (1.6 km). The "canyon started from the west, then another formed from the east, and the two broke through and met as a single majestic rent in the earth some six million years ago.
The Grand Canyon is a gift that transcends what we experience. Its beauty and size humbles us. Its timelessness provokes a comparison to our short existence. In its vast spaces we may find solace from our hectic lives.
