Memorial Day travel down for first time in 6 years, AAA says

For the first time in six years, fewer Americans will hit the roads and the airports for a Memorial Day weekend getaway, according to AAA Arizona.

Soaring pump prices, airfares, rental car rates and hotel tabs plus a weakened economy have squashed early summer vacation plans for many, said Linda Gorman, AAA Arizona spokeswoman.

“It’s a small decrease (from Memorial Day 2007),” Gorman said, but it could be an omen of how the summer travel season will shape up.

If gas prices continue to climb, and hotels, airlines and rental car companies don’t try to compensate by offering super deals, it could be a tough time for the U.S. tourism industry, she said.

In surveying Americans on Memorial Day plans, AAA found would-be vacationers in the western United States are more likely to travel despite budget woes, Gorman said.
So don’t look for noticeable less traffic on the local roads or at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Overall AAA estimates that 12 percent of Americans will celebrate Memorial Day away from home. Most, 83 percent, will get to their holiday destination by car, and 11 percent will travel by plane. The rest will use a bus, train or other mode of transportation.

Flagstaff, Arizona or Salt Lake City

Flagstaff, Arizona? is a compact college town sprinkled with small hotels, lively nightlife and an excellent point of departure for one of the most beautiful, and famous, areas for hiking in the country: the Grand Canyon. With a mix of students, backpackers and locals, the town has a hippie meets honky-tonk vibe.

Although Flagstaff does have a small airport, the nearest city with direct flights to both San Francisco and New York is Phoenix, just over two hours drive away. A slightly shorter distance from Phoenix is Sedona, offering excellent hiking through the red rock region.
If you go to Arizona, check out Amy Silverman’s “Going To: Flagstaff” or Keridwen Cornelius’s “36 Hours in Sedona, Ariz.” A great hotel option in Flagstaff is the Holiday Inn Express Flagstaff (800-533-2754) & Fairfield Inn Flagstaff (800-574-6395) .

A runner-up is Salt Lake City, Utah, which is a good base for hiking into the Cedar Mountains, 40 miles away. Michael Benanav explored the Cedar trails in “Ah (New) Wilderness in Utah” , which opened up 100,000 acres of wilderness in 2006.

In “Going To: Salt Lake City” , we recommended the Holiday Inn Express Flagstaff (800-533-2754) & Fairfield Inn Flagstaff (800-574-6395) . If you don’t want to stay in the capital city, a culturally stimulating option less than an hour away is the Sundance Resort (800-892-1600; http://www.sundanceresort.com/), which offers year-round accommodation, classes and lectures.

Free Wi-Fi, but Not for All

The battle between free and paid wireless Internet access is starting to look like a draw. Or more accurately, a third variation is winning - a combination of the two.

Travelers want to log on everywhere at no charge, while hotels, airports and coffee shops are looking for a way to pay for their Wi-Fi networks as visitors increasingly use greater amounts of bandwidth.

The compromise that is emerging is to offer both free and paid options, with the free services increasingly requiring something in return, like viewing an advertisement or signing up for a loyalty program.

'Our position is, give the user a choice,' said David Blumenfeld, a senior vice president with JiWire, which publishes an online directory of free hotspots but also sells ads displayed on public Wi-Fi networks. 'It's not an argument about free versus paid,' he said. 'It's free and paid.'

Flagstaff hotel plan may be refiled

Plans for a six-story resort on Flagstaff Mountain in Jim Thorpe, rejected in March after a deadline passed without the developer submitting parking details, could be resubmitted as early as today, the developer said.
Tim Markley of Surreal Properties, who owns Flagstaff Ballroom and Gallo's Pub & Grill, said he probably will appear before the borough Planning Commission to discuss the plans May 20.

Markley said alterations to his original plans are minor and include a new access easement agreement with developer Jacob Arner of Awesome View Estates, who owns the neighboring 86-lot Canyon Rim Estates development. Read More.
